I have a great deal of respect for my sister Katie. She is in college right now just a few hours south of Atlanta. She is smart, creative, and if you got the spend time with her you would laugh and feel loved. She is a dreamer, a slave to the belief that the world could get better. Looking at the many issues facing us as problems, she is excited about being a part of solving some of them.
She has a big heart, and special compassion for kids in low income areas. She is thinking about working in social services or a related area, in an effort to works towards creating a better system for how we are dealing with orphans and rejects in America.
Dreamers believe in hope – even amidst odds that would point to despair. Doubting is easy, negativity is backed up by proof, but dreamers refuse to be held down by the way things currently are – they believe and live based on how things should be.
There are a lot of people who would laugh at Katie, these people are known as cynics. They have years of life experience, knowledge and practical reasons for why Katie is naive and foolish to really believe in being a part of change.
The dangers of the cynic’s view of the world is obvious, their influence subtle yet powerful. Like the dreamer, the influence of their ideas are all around us – forcing you to make an intentional choice, will you be a dreamer or a cynic?
I hope Katie never stops believing and working towards a better future for others, because if she can – so can you and I. What about you, what are you dreaming about right now? Do you have any dreams that have turned cynical over time that could be redeemed?
